In the Studio... Jay Frank

Jay Frank is currently the Senior Vice President of Music Strategy for Country Music Television (CMT). He oversees the implementation of music across all platforms, including TV, web, mobile, and video on-demand.

Today, he dropped in the Music Business Radio studios to talk about his book, FutureHit.DNA.  It's a road map for songwriters, producers, and artists, which outlining 15 points that must exist for a chart topping song. It shows how subtle changes to a song, which make little difference to music fans, can result in big differences in that song’s placement on the charts and royalty payments.

Rounder Records was founded in 1970 and is now the third largest independent record label in the United States with over 4000 releases.  With countless Grammy Awards and nominations, Rounder has found a place in American music history.  Artists on Rounder include  Alison Krauss, Robert Plant, Ralph Stanley, Wilson Pickett, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Buckwheat Zydeco, Woody Guthrie, Irma Thomas, Steve Martin, JJ Cale, Nanci Griffith, Bela Fleck, Riders in the Sky, Rush, The Tragically Hip, Godsmack, and Duran Duran, among others.  

Marian and Ken talk about founding Rounder Records, while in college, selling records our of their van at music festivals, and how things went from that to what Rounder Records is today.

Raul Malo first received widespread acclaim as the lead singer of multi-platinum, country band, the Mavericks.  He was co-writer of many of their singles, as well as writer of Rick Trevino's 2003 single "In My Dreams." Since disbanding the Mavericks in the early 2000s, he's pursued a solo career. 

We talked about all of this and more, including his recent performing with Neil Diamond.

Among the highlights of this episode is a great, live performance of an unreleased song.
