Jason Moon Wilkins is next on Music Business Radio.  Jason is a music industry consultant, manager, radio personality, journalist, and music festival producer.  He is founder and head of the music festival and conference, Next Big Nashville.  It will showcase of over 150 upcoming bands of all genres as well as feature guest speakers talking about all aspects of the industry. 

In this episode, Jason talks about how artists can get noticed by festival talent bookers, building a local scene through events, the importance of community, and changing the image of Music City.

Andrea Kleid is the Director of National Promotions at Word Entertainment in Nashville.  She works with over 150 radio stations across the country to promote songs and brand artists.

Andrea is also the Music Industry Liason for RAINN - the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization.  She founded the annual Red Umbrella Tour, a benefit concert tour for RAINN with shows in 10 cities featuring over 35 independent artists.

Jenn Brinn started her career as Manager of National Promotion at EMI CMG Label Group, serving as the in-house radio promoter for the AC, CHR, & INSPO charts.  She currently runs Ear To The Ground Entertainment, working with the legendary songwriting venue Eddie’s Attic and artists like Jen Foster and Margaret Becker.

This episode talks about radio promotion, artist development, using charity to promote music, and using music to promote charity.

Jeff Cook was in the Music Business Radio studios today.  He's an artist, writer, and producer who has had songs cut by Tommy Bolin, Motley Crue, Deep Purple, and others.  He's been in radio promotion over 30 years and worked with artists like The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Metallica, Motley Crue, 10,000 Maniacs, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, and Drive By Truckers, just to name a few.

We talked about radio promotion, what it takes to get an artist on the radio, writing hit songs, the value of a good song, career longevity for artists, and more.

After the show, Jeff joined us for a Music Business Radio Post-Show, where he answered questions from Gary (Producer) and Dan (Engineer) about the finer points of radio and what it takes to get music on the air.

In the Studio... WPA

We were joined today by the founding members of WPA (Works Progress Administration), including Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek), and Luke Bulla (Jerry Douglas Band, Ricky Skaggs, Lyle Lovett).

We talked about the stories behind their previous bands, how WPA came together, what it's like to be in a band with eight people, record promotion, and more.  We heard the new WPA album as well as got a live performance of three WPA songs.

Protecting the Rights of Independent Musicians...

Rich Bengloff is President of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), is a non-profit trade organization fighting for and protecting the rights of the Independent music label community. 

A2IM is an organization made up of Independent music labels that have banded together to form a central voice advocating for the health of the Independent music sector.

Rich also serves as a board member representing the Independent music label community on the boards of the SoundExchange and the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies ("AARC"). 

Rich has spent much of his career in the music and entertainment industry, having served in various capacities at SONY Corporation of America. As Vice President of Columbia Pictures Entertainment; as Vice President, Finance and Administration at Relativity Records/R.E.D. Distribution; and as Vice President, Distribution Operations for Sony Music Distribution between 1989-1998. He then joined Elektra Entertainment Group to become Senior Vice President/CFO. In 2005, he became WNYC Radio’s Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer.

We talked about where the music business is heading, opportunities which could mean more royalties for performing artists, and more.
