Why is Your Song Not On the Demo Derby?

A common question...

"Hi this is [INSERT NAME HERE].  It says my demo was reviewed, but I didn't hear it in the broadcast?"

If you've sent us a demo for review, see your name on the "In the Studio..." segment, but didn't hear your music on a show, here is why...

The show that you hear is actually one of three edits, which are created for the various markets that run Music Business Radio.  We have a standard version for commercial radio stations, a "non-comm" version for non-commercial version, which is a little longer, for stations which do not have commercials, and an online version.  Editing the "Demo Derby" segment of the show is one of the ways we work around getting the perfect show length-- play a demo a bit longer, cut it off sooner, or sometimes remove the review from the show all together.

Because of this, we've got a lot of music which was reviewed by guests, but never aired.  This content is used for other sections of the show, including bonus "online only" episodes and "best of" episodes.

So if you've seen that your music was reviewed by us, know that the review will see the light of day...eventually.

And if your music hasn't been reviewed by us, know that we're getting to it. :)

Chris Palmer started in the mail room at Warner Brothers Records, working his way up to Senior Vice-President and General Manager.  He's worked with acts like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Steve Earle, and Faith Hill.

Both now work managing Take 6.

We talked about how records get on the radio, the future of the music business, the advantages and disadvantages of both small and large music companies, and more.

And of course, we reviewed demos.

Ken has worked with a number of top artists including Stan Kenton, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Lou Rawls, Glen Campbell, Buck Owens, the Beach Boys, and the Band.  As a producer, he has done work for Don Ho, David Cassidy, Waylon Jennings, Andy Williams, and many more.

In the Studio... Mark Adkison

Mark Adkison was in the Music Business Radio Studios today.  Mark is the co-founder and general manager of HearItFirst.com, an online portal for both signed and independent Christian music.

Prior to his current position, Mark was Vice President of Digital Strategy and Development at EMI Christian Music Group.  He co-founded HearItFirst.com in 1998, while working with EMI.

We talked about the history of online music marketing as well as where things are headed, how bands and musicians can be more effective online, and why marketing offline is still important and should be part of your total promotion strategy.
