Anna Wilson and her manager, Lisa Davis, are next on Music Business Radio.

Anna is a pop/jazz recording artist and songwriter whose timeless, sophisticated sound is juxtaposed by her stunningly contemporary voice and message.  Her critically acclaimed sophomore CD, Time Changes Everything, was digitally released by Transfer Records in April 2007 as a follow-up to her debut, The Long Way (Asylum/Curb).

As a veteran performer, Wilson has toured with Boz Scaggs, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams. As a prolific songwriter (Criterion Music Group), she has penned cuts for pop and country artists, including Reba McEntire, Chuck Wicks, and Lee Ann Womack.  Wilson also has a long history of partnering with the entertainment industry and major consumer brands, and her songs can be found everywhere from Miramax films to the Whirlpool Corporation’s website.

Recently, Anna appeared in FOX's primetime, docu-soap, Nashville.  Throughout the series, Anna's work as a writer and artist are highlighted.  Anna is also featured in Habitat for Humanity International's televised public service announcements, which can be seen nationally on FOX News and in select markets.  These spots center around Anna’s Habitat-inspired single, “A House, A Home,” which is available for download at habitat.org.

Fred James was in the Music Business Radio studios today.  Fred is a musician, songwriter, and producer who is the owner of Bluesland Productions.

Bluesland was started in the mid 1980s as a music publishing concern, having immediate success with covers by Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks, Sonny Burgess, Katie Webster, and countless others.

The company soon expanded into music production, producing records for labels around the world by artists as diverse as Homesick James, The Sam Lay Blues Band, Tommy Tutone, Frank Frost & Sam Carr (The Jelly Roll Kings), Roscoe Shelton, Earl Gaines, Johnny Jones, Charles Walker, and Stan Webb to name a few.

Fred has played for Johnny Copeland, Arthur Williams, The Jelly Roll Kings, Billy Joe Shaver, Bo Diddley, The Carter Bros., The Memphis Horns, Dr. Hook, Tommy Tutone, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Van Zandt, Ronnie Sessions, Dickie Lee, Bobby Hebb and many, many others.  His songwriting credits include Shemekia Copeland, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Omar & The Howlers, Junior Wells with Bonnie Raitt, Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, and Stan Webb.

We talked about the rich heritage of R&B labels in Nashville including Bullet Records, Rich Records, Ref-O-Ree Records, and Champion Records.  Bluesland owns these catalogs and has reissued them via SPV Records in Germany.

We talked about how one great song can have a career of 50 years or more.  And we talked about how the music business has changed over the years, but a lot of things are still the same and coming around again.

In the Studio... Rich Bengloff

Rich Bengloff was in the Music Business Radio studios today... Rich is President of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), is a non-profit trade organization fighting for and protecting the rights of the Independent music label community. 

A2IM is an organization made up of Independent music labels that have banded together to form a central voice advocating for the health of the Independent music sector.

Rich also serves as a board member representing the Independent music label community on the boards of the SoundExchange and the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies ("AARC"). 

Rich has spent much of his career in the music and entertainment industry, having served in various capacities at SONY Corporation of America. As Vice President of Columbia Pictures Entertainment; as Vice President, Finance and Administration at Relativity Records/R.E.D. Distribution; and as Vice President, Distribution Operations for Sony Music Distribution between 1989-1998. He then joined Elektra Entertainment Group to become Senior Vice President/CFO. In 2005, he became WNYC Radio’s Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer.

We talked about where the music business is heading, opportunities which could mean more royalties for performing artists, and more.

Brad Colerick was in the Music Business Radio studios today.  Brad is the founder of DeepMix, a Los Angeles based company specializing in music supervision and marketing for the entertainment and advertising industries.

He’s had a very successful career making music for commercials and film and has worked with with a long list of legendary artists including Johnny Cash, Buddy Guy, Shawn Colvin, Suzy Bogguss, The Chi-Lites and BB King.

In addition to music supervision, Brad is also an accomplished artist himself.  We talked about his latest album, which included a song that has been licensed by Etch-A-Sketch and also been in the Top 5 of both the Folk DJ and Euro-Americana charts.

Dan Reed, the Music Director of WXPN in Philadelphia was in the Music Business Radio studios today...sort of.  We actually did the show via ISDN, with Dan at WXPN.

We talked about the changing face of radio, local scenes, commercial and non-commercial radio, and more.

In the Studio... Jeffrey Steele

Jeffrey Steele was in the Music Business Radio studios today. 

Jeffrey is a songwriter with about 500 cuts including recordings by Cascada, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lucky Bucks, Joe Nichols, Jason Michael Carrol, Rascal Flatts, and Faith Hill.

When not writing he can be found producing and performing. Jeffrey lent his producing skills on the Montgomery Gentry albums My Town and Some People Change as well as Keith Anderson’s latest album, C’mon!.  Jeffrey also spends time on the road promoting his own material and playing dates with such artists as; VanZant, Delbert McClinton, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

When he’s in Nashville writing, he is also running his publishing company 3 Ring Circus Music. Jeffrey can also be seen on GAC’s, THE HITMEN OF MUSIC ROW, which chronicles the lives of four chart-topping Nashville songwriters.

We talked about how Jeffrey got his start in the music business, got advice for upcoming songwriters, and lots more...including the stories behind some of his biggest hits, as well as in studio performances with just Jeffrey on an acoustic guitar.

This is an episode which will appeal to music fans as well as anybody in the music business and shouldn't be missed.
