Next on Music Business Radio... Jason Moon Wilkins

Jason Moon Wilkins is next on Music Business Radio. He's worked in various capacities within the music industry, including having his own record deal with the band toybean in the mid-90s, playing bass for artists such as Josh Rouse and Garrison Starr, and acting as a consultant, manager, DJ, journalist, and festival coordinator.

His latest project, Next Big Nashville, is a festival of over 140 upcoming bands of all genres.

Jason talked about building a local scene, managing major label acts, getting record deals, and losing record deals.

Jason hijacked the Demo Derby to play some upcoming artists from Next Big Nashville.  Last year's event had 33 acts and 14 of them have been signed, so if the trend continues, you'll be hearing a lot more of what we heard.

He’s currently on tour with Kenny Loggins.

Wintergreen - The Music Video

Last week, we cut a show with Doyle Davis.  Doyle is owner of Grimey's New and Preloved Music as well as the independent label, Outta Sight Records.

During this show, we reviewed a band called Wintergreen in the Demo Derby and mentioned their video, "When I Wake Up."  It's tells the story of Atari's E.T. game, which so many people didn't like, Atari buried millions of copies in a landfill.

In the Studio... Wally Wilson

Wally Wilson was in the Music Business Radio studio today.

Wally has a interesting story in that he started out in the music business as a janitor at Tree Music Publishing.  That didn't last long though, when he was moved to a staff writer position. 

As a writer, Wally has had songs recorded by acts like Bo Diddley, Aaron Neville, Joe Cocker, Lonestar, Patti Loveless, and Joe Diffie.  As a producer, he's worked with acts like Lonestar, Joan Baez, and Lorrie Morgan.

Wally shared his advice for songwriters, thoughts on what makes a good song, and had some great "behind the scenes" stories from the acts that he's worked with.

He has worked in the music industry for more than 25 years, as a touring musician, session player, manager, booking agent, songwriter and music photographer.  He has worked with clients as diverse as Davy Jones of the Monkees, Grammy-winning songwriter Don Henry, and international recording artist Clive Gregson.

Doyle Davis was in the Music Business Radio studios today.  Doyle is owner of Grimey's New and Preloved Music as well as the independent label, Outta Sight Records.

Some people say it's a bad time to be in the retail record business.  And some people say it's a bad time to own a record label.  Doyle doesn't think so and why he feels that way is what we talked about.

We also talked about building community, how to get the attention of a record label, why kids are buying vinyl, how the Internet is important to new music, being a "tastemaker," and more. Things like this...
