Episode #39 - Billy Yates

Billy Yates' first cut as was the George Jones' smash, "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair."  And plenty has happened since then. He's had several songs recorded by George Jones, including the Grammy nominated hit "Choices", along with other cuts by George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans, Gary Allan, Joe Nichols, John Michael Montgomery, Tracy Lawrence, Doug Stone, Ricochet, Ricky Van Shelton, David Allan Coe and others.

In addition to this, he's also had lucrative sideline writing and singing jingles for firms including Chevy Trucks, Ford Trucks, Kellogg's, Slick 50, Heinz 57, and Pepsi Cola.

And he’s an artist…  In the last few months, he’s played around the world, including Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Finland, and Lithuania, where he headlined a festival with an attendance of 40,000 people.

Chad Denning was in the Music Business Radio studios today.  He's a music video director and editor and you've seen his work on CMT, GMA, and MTV Networks.  Chad is also co-owner of a company called Gamma Blast.  Clients include Universal Records, EMI, Compadre Records, and more.

We talked about how indie bands can make a good music video, viral music videos, electronic press kits, creating DVDs, and more.

And we reviewed demos.

Music Business Radio - Our Recording and Editing Process

As you've probably noticed, we have guests in the studio a few weeks before you get the show.  If you're the curious type, you may be wondering why.

The process...

1. I, David, talk with the guests a few days before we record to go over their bios and potential show topics.  I then use this information to prepare an outline of the show.

2. Guests come in to the studio a little before "show time" for us to finalize everything, make sure the intros are correct, meet the producer, meet the engineer, meet the editor, meet the coordinator, and go over exactly what is going to happen when we start rolling tape. 

3. We roll tape and end up with something like this.  This was a show with four guests at once and you can hear Gary (producer) in the background helping things along.

4. The show goes to Justin (editor) who has the huge job of making everything sound really good. :)

And that is why things take a few weeks.

A Nashville native, he broke into the music industry in the early 70s as a recording engineer at one of Nashville's then more prominent studios, Woodland Sound.

Today, he’s Executive V.P. & GM at Universal Music Publishing Group Nashville.

We talked about building connections in the music business, the crazy things people to do get songs cut, what makes a good song, and more.

In the Studio... John Strohm

John Strohm was in the Music Business Radio studios today.

John played in a number of indie pop projects during the '80s and '90s.  He is the founder and guitarist of Boston's legendary Blake Babies and has also played with Antenna, Velo Deluxe, Hello Strangers, and the Lemonheads.

In 1998 he took a break from music in order to focus on school, eventually earning a law degree from Samford University.  He now practices music business law at the firm of Johnston, Barton, Proctor, and Powell.

Still doing music, he has three studio albums, his latest called “Everyday Life.”

In the Studio... Nancy Tunick

Nancy Tunick was in the Music Business Radio studios today...

She's Vice-President of Promotion at Warner Brothers Records Nashville where she designs strategies and heads the team that promotes to radio the music of acts that include Faith Hill, Big&Rich, Blake Shelton, The Wreckers and Lori McKenna.  Nancy is currently the only female to hold the Vice-President of Promotion title within Country Music, and is among only a handful of females to have reached that position in the history of Nashville’s music industry.

Leslie Tomasino DiPiero's first publishing experience came in Miami, working for Steve Alaimo (writer of the Allman Brothers song, "Melissa") at Lindsay Ann Music. Alaimo was a mentor, teaching her about the world of publishing, songwriters and artists.

After a move to Nashville, she opened her own publishing company, Tom-Leis Music in 2004.

Currently, Tom-Leis Music has three writers: Sarah Buxton on Lyric Street Records, Brandon Kinney on Capitol Records, and Troy Johnson.

The company has had over 25 cuts by artists including: George Canyon, Sara Evans, Blaine Larsen, Keith Urban, and Trent Willmon.
