This Week on MBR... David Gans

The Super Bowl is happening at our normally scheduled time, so rather than broadcast a brand new show for the three people who would be listening, we're going to rerun our show with David Gans.

David started his career as a songwriter, went on to be a writer for MIX Magazine, BAM, and Record, and got involved with the Grateful Dead as a biographer, producer, and host of the nationally syndicated radio show, the Grateful Dead Hour.

David talked about the art of songwriting, why the Grateful Dead has been successful, music merchandising, and a lot more.

In the Studio... Autumn House

Autumn House was in the Music Business Radio studio today. She's Senior Director of A&R at Capitol Records and is responsible for bringing us such acts as Cyndi Thompson and Dierks Bentley.

Before her work in A&R, Autumn worked at Starstuck Entertainment and Maverick Music, where she was involved with publishing.  She secured cuts for artists like Reba McIntire, Lee Ann Womack, Mark Willis, and Deanna Carter.

We talked about how songs get cut, from both the song plugger and A&R perspective.  We talked about Dierks Bentley and how he got signed.  And of course, we reviewed demos.

In the Studio... Pinky Gonzales

Pinky Gonzales was in the Music Business Radio studio today. He started his career in the booking and management sector of the business, working for the William Morris Agency and Sheridan Square Entertainment, where he worked with legendary music industry executive Danny Goldberg and artist/producer Todd Rundgren.

Recognizing a need for new media services throughout the music industry, he founded Artist Media Group in 2001, where he quickly signed deals with future super-group Rascal Flatts, American Idol Kelly Clarkson, DreamWorks Records, Capitol Records, and Universal South. 

In 2005, Artist Media Group merged with echomusic, a similar company representing Alison Krause, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, General Motors, and many other artists and well-known brands.

Pinky is now a Managing Partner at echomusic, overseeing business development and new media consultation.

Keith Thomas was on the show this week.  You may not know the name, but you'll know some of the artists he has produced and written songs for, including Amy Grant, Vanessa Williams, Michael Bolton, Mandy Moore, 98 Degrees, and Whitney Houston.  In all, he's had 40 #1 singles and album sales in excess of 30,000,000 copies.

Keith talked about artist development, songwriting, and more.  He also took us behind the scenes of his new project, Hollywood Records artist Jordan Pruitt.
