In the Studio... David Macias

David Macias. president of Thirty Monkeys dropped by today.   His company offers distribution, sales, and marketing services to independent labels and artists.

David has worked in a number of different aspects of the industry including retail, production, and management.   He worked at Artista and EMI before starting Thirty Monkeys.  With partner Doug Merrick, he managed Rich Robinson, Hal Ketchum, Suzy Bogguss, and BR549.

We talked about finding/being a good manager, owning your own company as opposed to working for somebody else, production.  We also sampled his new project with Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers.

Episode #8 - Jason Blume

Jason is one of those rare individuals to ever achieve the distinction of having songs on the Country, Pop and R&B charts – all at the same time.  His songs are on albums and videos that have sold more than 50 million copies and have been recorded by artists including Britney Spears, Jesse McCartney, and the Backstreet Boys.

Country music hits include John Berry's Top 5 single, "Change My Mind," (which received a BMI "Millionaire Award" for achieving more than one million airplays), five cuts with Collin Raye, Steve Azar's hit single, "I Never Stopped Lovin' You," and a chart single by the Oak Ridge Boys.

Episode #7 - Evelyn Shriver and Susan Nadler

The latest episode of Music Business Radio...  This one features Evelyn Shriver and Susan Nadler of Bandit Records.  Get it via podcast.

Evelyn was the first female president of a major label in the history of country music when she took over the helm of Asylum Records.

Susan was Executive VP/A&R at Asylum.

Though neither had ever worked at a label, their different approach to the record business resulted in two Grammy wins during their first year of business. Among their first signings at the label was the legendary George Jones.

When Asylum Records was closed by AOL Time Warner as part of its corporate consolidation, the two got together to form Bandit Records. Though George Jones could have remained with Warner Bros, he chose to leave with them.

This is just a brief history of what these two have done in the business…

Bob Baker dropped by the Music Business Radio studio today.  Bob is author of the book Guerrilla Music Marketing and is known for his low-cost and no-cost marketing techniques.

We talked about easy techniques that bands and musicians can use to double (and triple)  music business income, how to best utilize MySpace, and how to improve press kits so they don't get trashed.

Dez is probably best known as the lead guitarist and musical director for Prince and the Revolution, but has worked with a number of artists including Narada Michael Walden, Aretha Franklin, and Vanity 6.

In the Studio... Anastasia Brown

Legendary music mogul Miles Copeland has said of his former partner, “Anastasia Brown has the ears and the eyes to spot and develop talent, create brilliant music opportunities and has the relationships to bring international songwriters and artists together for a common cause.” 

Anastasia is credited with discovering Keith Urban and has worked with artists of all genres including Sting, Peter Frampton, John Berry, and Junior Brown.  You've also seen her as the hard-hitting judge on USA Network's Nashville Star.

We talked about how independent artists can get their music used in films, how Nashville Start helps (and hurts) artists, and more.  She had a lot of great advice for upcoming musicians and music business people... And of course, we reviewed plenty of material sent in for our Demo Derby segment...and Anastasia didn't hold back with her advice.
